Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace; Legal issues regarding Workplace Mental Health; Creating policies, Strategic Planning for Mental Health in Workpalces

Martin helps participants in his workshops, seminars and conferences understand and address the new and rapidly emerging obligations of employers to provide and maintain psychologically safe and healthy workplaces. Presentations and workshops can be addressed to the needs of specific constituencies within the workplace including, but not limited to: senior leadership, middle management, line supervisors, unions, all employees; HR, OH&S, Health Promotion professionals and committees.

Depending on the needs and preferences of participants, he places an emphasis on one, some or all of the topics below:

  • The basic legal requirements of the psychologically safe workplace (in lay language), using case examples as illustrative stories
  • Policy requirements and the contribution of free resources such as Guarding Minds at Work
  • How the things that go wrong in a psychologically unsafe workplace could be usually avoided, using a story telling approach to make the point
  • The roles that everyone needs to play in a psychologically safe and healthy workplace. This includes management, supervisors, team leaders, unions, workers, HR, OH&S staff and committees, health promotion/wellness professionals etc.
  • How teams and other work units can take on the task of creating and maintaining a psychologically safe work culture through programs such as Vital Workplace offered by CMHA

Martin also speaks on broader topics that are of interest to policy makers. For example, he speaks about

  • the population health implications of what happens to employee mental health in the workplace
  • the costs and benefits of approaching workplace mental health as a population health issue
  • the need for, and the proposed content of national standards for the psychologically safe workplace

These engagements are of varying length depending again on the needs and preferences of participants. They can be interactive workshop formats, Q&A sessions, lecture style etc.
They range from fifty minutes to full days.
